Terror in Tunisia

LAST WEEK’S terror attacks have once again shown the world what President Assad is up against in Syria today. The slaughter of innocent tourists at a Tunisian beach resort, the bombing of Shia Muslims in their mosque in Kuwait and the attack on a factory in France were carried out by sectarian fanatics — followers of ISIS, the “Islamic State” movement that has been spreading death and destruction throughout Syria for the past four years.

A wave of revulsion swept the world when the news broke of the brutal attacks in Tunisia, Kuwait and France. Once again the imperialist leaders are talking about the “war on terror” which in reality ends up as a war against the Arabs, as it did in Iraq, Libya and Syria. But none of them say anything about ending imperialism’s support for Syrian rebels and “regime change” in Damascus.

Least of all from David Cameron whose weasel words about “this poisonous death cult that is seducing too many young minds in Europe, in America, in the Middle East and elsewhere” failed to address the underlying reasons for the violence and instability in the Middle East.

The Prime Minister rightly said that these “absolutely horrific” events had “shocked the whole of the world”. He then went on to say that ISIS posed an “existential threat” to the West, whatever that means, and that the Government must have a “full-spectrum response” to the “Islamic State” threat — including continuing with Nato-led air strikes that are supposedly targeted against ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria.

David Cameron said nothing about who helped set up ISIS in the first place or who has been funding and arming ISIS over the years. That’s not surprising because ISIS is the creature of the feudal Arab oil-princes, led by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with the less than covert support of Turkey, Israel and US imperialism.

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Ya’alon recently admitted that Israel has been providing “humanitarian aid” to Syrian rebels confirming on the record that Israel has been helping the forces that are fighting to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad. And Henry Kissinger, one of Richard Nixon’s chief henchmen in the 1970s, told Fox News that the United States was responsible for arming ISIS though he did not say that this was a deliberate process.

This is what the Syrians have said all along. When the imperialists and their feudal Arab allies launched the uprising in Syria in 2011 the “Islamic State in Syria,” as it was known, was supported by the Nato powers. Arms and cash are continuing to be conveyed across Turkey to sustain the ISIS militia as well as those of the Muslim Brotherhood and Al Qaida in Syria to bring down the Assad government, which has long been an obstacle to total imperialist domination of the Middle East.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated the Kremlin’s political, economic, and military support for the Syrian government during talks with the Syrian foreign minister in Moscow last week. Putin urged all the countries of the Middle East to join the battle against the ISIS terrorist group. Putin further called on “all nations” to pool their efforts together to fight ISIS regardless of their relations with Syria. If the imperialists really want to stop terror they should stop supporting the Syrian rebels and back Russian efforts to bring an end to the conflict.
