The New Worker

AND THEY have good reason to be merry after eight years of austerity that has plunged the working class into poverty and destitution whilst leaving the rich unscathed. For the rich every day is Christmas day. But that’s not surprising because that is what capitalism is all about. While millions of people struggle just to keep a roof over their heads a tiny elite live lives beyond the reach, and often beyond the imagination, of most workers.
Surely it is an obscenity when one of the richest countries in the world spends billions on the Trident nuclear weapons system and overseas aggression whilst millions are unemployed or working for bread-line wages. Surely it is obscene that millions of working people are being driven to the food banks and forced to live in the abject poverty of the benefits cuts regime, whilst the rich brazenly flaunt the wealth they’ve acquired through extortion, exploitation and plunder at home and abroad.
Doubtless we will be told that this is the “season of goodwill” by the religious charlatans who reserve their most pious platitudes for the supposed birthday of the “Prince of Peace” on 25th December. But like the Pharisees, whom the clergy pretend to scorn, they ignore the teachings of their Master who drove the money-changers out of the Temple and said: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
But the Jesus of Nazareth whom they claim to worship barely gets a look-in over the festive season these days as the spirit of Christmas has long been reduced to exchanging gifts and cards, gorging oneself on turkey and drinking oneself silly around the mistletoe. And why not?
Most workers in Britain now get paid leave for one or two days over the Christmas/ New Year break. For one brief moment in the year they can put their feet up, enjoy themselves and try to live the way the rich live every day of their parasitical existence.
Unfortunately we pay for it when the decorations come down and the relentless piles of bills mount up in January, whilst the rich carry on as if nothing has happened.
For thousands on low income or benefits it is a miserable time trying to explain to children why Santa has forgotten them again and their dinner is whatever the food bank has in stock.
Bourgeois politicians and their paid religious leaders preach about the superiority of the capitalist system, which they call freedom. But it is freedom only for the exploiters to continue to rob and plunder working people at home and abroad to ensure that a tiny handful of parasites can live the lives of Roman emperors on the backs of the millions upon millions of working people.
The ruling class, the industrialists, the capitalists and the big landowners, claim that they stand for “human rights” and intellectual freedom, but it is the freedom of the straitjacket and the dungeon. They preach this freedom with their bombers, their special forces and their economic blockades against all those who dare to stand up for themselves.
They say we have free speech and live in a democracy; but it is democracy and freedom only for themselves alone. If we really lived in a democracy we would expect to see the majority of our representatives in Parliament and our local government drawn from the majority of the population — the working class. In fact you can count the number of workers in Parliament on your fingers.
In reality bourgeois democracy is democracy only for the exploiters. It’s dictatorship in all but the formal sense over the exploited. Bourgeois elections are used so that the smallest number of people can manipulate the maximum number of votes for a parliament that provides the façade for those who really rule this country.
Their Christmas message is one of oppression, extortion and exploitation. Ours is for peace and socialism. Peace because only the oppressors and exploiters want war. Socialism because it is essential to eliminate exploitation, unemployment, poverty, economic crisis and war. Socialism will end this rotten system once and for all. Speed the day!
