Syria on the road to victory!

by our Arab Affairs correspondent

SYRIAN troops and their Lebanese and Iranian allies are continuing to advance on all fronts against the ISIS and Muslim Brotherhood terror gangs in the east of the country. Donald Trump has supported a keynote local ceasefire brokered by the Russians. And the chief of US imperialism has ordered the CIA to end its covert “train-and-equip” programme in support of so-called “moderate” rebels fighting against the popular front government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Billions of dollars-worth of arms were syphoned to the “Free Syrian Army” — a Muslim Brotherhood front — and other so-called “moderate” rebel groups via Turkey and Jordan to further US imperialism’s efforts to overthrow the Assad government.

The terrorist gangs, armed by imperialism and funded by the feudal Arab oil kings plunged Syria into chaos. But the Russian intervention that began in September 2015, at the request of the Syrian government, stopped the gunmen in their tracks and paved the way for the victory offensive that has now freed most of the country.

More than half a million people have been killed or wounded by imperialist-inspired violence over the past six years. But despite estimated losses of more than $200 billion dollars and a devastated infrastructure the Syrian government has remained steadfast in defending its secular and democratic constitution.

Over the past two months Syrian forces liberated at least 55 towns from ISIS and killed some 2,000 terrorists in the province of Aleppo while the Russian air force conducted at least 2,000 sorties and carried out 5,850 airstrikes on terrorist targets in Syria.

South of Raqqa, the besieged “capital” of the “Islamic State” 44 oil and gas wells have been liberated, some of them seriously damaged by ISIS as they fled. Now the Syrian military and its allies are advancing against ISIS along the Euphrates River.

Back in Moscow the Kremlin is expressing cautious optimism about new American moves that may reflect a new-found realism within the Trump administration.

That’s certainly the view of Paolo von Schirach, the president of the Global Policy Institute and professor of international affairs at BAU university in Washington. Prof von Shirach, a former adviser to the European Union, said: “The chance of overthrowing Assad via military actions is a dream. US efforts to force regime change in Damascus by supporting the domestic Syrian opposition through military assistance have failed...I call this cutting one’s losses and moving on” .

The formal end of the CIA’s support for the terror gangs remains to be seen. But the endorsement of a new cease-fire in a strategic area east of the capital, Damascus, seems to show that the White House is now slightly tilting towards the Russian position.

US imperialism has recently endorsed a Russian-brokered local cease-fire in Eastern Ghouta province — one of the last rebel strongholds in the country.

The deal, designating the area a “de-escalation zone” , was endorsed by the Russian military and Syrian rebel representatives in Egypt. The agreement provides for a ceasefire in the zone, allowing food and humanitarian aid to be brought in and the sick and wounded to be evacuated for treatment elsewhere. The truce is being monitored by Russian military police and the first relief aid shipment entered the Eastern Ghouta area on Tuesday.

Eastern Ghouta is in one of the four proposed “de-escalation zones” designated in an agreement reached in May between Syria’s allies, Iran and Russia, and Turkey which supports the rebels. But previous cease-fires had broken down due to the lack of an agreed monitoring mechanism.
