Marching against austerity

by New Worker correspondent

COMRADES joined thousands of Londoners who marched through central London last Saturday to demonstrate against the Tory government’s austerity regime.

Organised by the People’s Assembly, the protest was supported by other groups such as Stop the War Coalition, Kill the Bill, Extinction Rebellion, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Black Lives Matter. Trade unions such as UNITE, CWU and PCS also supported the march that started outside the BBC in Portland Place and finished in Parliament Square where a rally was held.

The rally was addressed by Jeremy Corbyn, the former Labour Party leader, who said that: “If as a country we can afford to create more billionaires during a crisis, we can afford to tax those billionaires to fund the services that we need.”

The rally was also addressed by Ben Jamal of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and a speaker from Extinction Rebellion.

In his concluding speech, Stop the War’s John Rees attacked the government over the loss of lives caused by the poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic by the government.

At the rally, New Worker correspondents also had a quick chat with Barry Gardiner, the Labour MP for Brent North, to express their support for the ‘No Fire and Rehire’ Campaign.
