Stand by Venezuela! Free Maduro now!

by New Worker correspondent

Venezuela has called on the United Nations to demand the release of their president who was kidnapped by the Americans in a raid on Caracas last weekend, while tension rises following the American seizure of a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the north Atlantic that they claimed had violated the US sanctions regime on Venezuela.

At the UN Security Council Sun Lei, China’s deputy permanent representative to the global forum, urged Washington to heed the international community’s “overwhelming voice”, comply with international law and the UN Charter, halt actions that infringe on other countries’ sovereignty and security, stop trying to topple Venezuela’s government, and return to dialogue and negotiations as the path to a political solution.

Sun expressed China’s “deep shock” and strong condemnation of what he described as the “unilateral, illegal and bullying acts” of the USA, and he called for Washington to ensure the safety of Maduro and his wife, and to release them immediately.

Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are now being held in a New York jail on trumped-up charges of drug-dealing and “narco-terrorism”. People’s China, Russia and most of the Global South have rallied round the call of Acting President Delcy Rodriguez to condemn US aggression and demand the immediate and unconditional release of Maduro amid reports that over 100 Venezuelans and Cubans were killed in the American attack that was carried out with the assistance of traitors in the security forces of the Bolivarian Republic.

The Brazilian anti-imperialist journalist Pepe Escobar says that the Americans bribed the head of Maduro’s security detail and his circle as well as elements of the armed forces to pave the way for the American Delta Force squad and ensure that the anti-aircraft defences were neutralised during the raid. When a Russian commando unit got to Maduro’s residence, they were repelled by Maduro’s corrupt security. They were quickly dealt with, but when the Russians got inside the residence, the kidnapping had already taken place. The treacherous chief of the security detail was apprehended and shot. Now a state of emergency has been declared as security forces and local militias sweep through Caracas in the hunt for the American agents who helped the invaders during their daring weekend raid.

At the United Nations the Venezuelan envoy, Samuel Moncada, called on the UN Security Council to condemn the American attack that was a clear breach of international law and the Geneva Conventions. “When force is used to control resources, impose governments, or redesign states, we are faced with a logic that harks back to the worst practices of colonialism and neocolonialism,” Moncada said. “This scenario not only threatens Venezuela, it threatens international peace and security as a whole.” If the kidnapping of a head of state, the bombing of a sovereign country, and the open threat of further armed action are tolerated or downplayed, the message sent to the world is a devastating one, namely that law is optional, and that force is the true arbiter of international relations, Moncada warned.
