Belgian Communist breakthrough

IN Belgium's municipal and provincial elections held on 14th October the Workers' Party of Belgium (PTB) made a strong showing and affirmed itself as an emerging left force in the whole country. The PTB's electoral list “PTB+” obtained a total of 31 municipal councillors, 17 district councillors in Antwerp and four provincial councillors. The PTB won a total of 52 local seats in 12 municipalities, seven city districts and two provinces.

Norodom Sihanouk 1922 — 2012

Norodom Sihanouk became the King of Cambodia in 1941 during the Second World War. His country was a French protectorate under Japanese occupation. He headed the movement that led to independence in 1955 and his government pursued a policy of neutrality and friendship with north Vietnam, Laos and People’s China.

The big picture

WE WILL be marching this Saturday against the austerity measures that are being forced on the working class in Britain by an unrepentant and brutal ruling class that is happy to see living standards for the vast majority of people seriously reduced yet again. Meanwhile for many it is an absolute disaster; they face the loss of jobs, homes and benefits that will plunge them into absolute destitution as the last remains of our precious welfare safety net are destroyed.
