Venezuelans defy US imperialism

MILLIONS of Venezuelans took to the streets across the country on Monday to demonstrate their support for President Nicolas Maduro and the Bolivarian revolution that US imperialism is determined to crush. Tens of thousands of red-shirted supporters poured into the capital, Caracas, to close ranks with the revolutionary government and denounce US imperialism’s local lackeys, who were decisively defeated in the elections in July for a constituent assembly.

PCS fight to save Sheffield Jobcentre

THE CIVIL service union PCS is engaged in a campaign to prevent the closure of Sheffield’s Eastern Avenue Jobcentre to protect services for unemployed, sick and disabled people.

On Monday they began a two-week strike action, after week-long strikes in June and July.

Unity against fascism and racism

THE EVENTS in Charlottesville, the 40th anniversary of the Battle of Lewisham and last year’s 80th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street all emphasise one point — that communities coming together can challenge and reverse growing fascist and racist movements — even when these movements are backed by powerful sections of the ruling class.

But they also show that activity that is pacifist, submissive to the state — obeying the police at all times, holding anti-fascist protests miles away from where the fascists are, staying indoors to not get involved in violence that might offend the middle classes — are not enough. It is only full-face confrontation on the streets and blocking the fascists from reaching their goals that will do the job.
