THE BARELY OBSERVED cease-fire in the Persian Gulf ended last week in an exchange of missiles between Iran and the United States. US forces bombed Larak island in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran retaliated by launching missiles at American warplanes stationed in Jordan. Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps says they’ve dealt a “decisive” blow to a terrorist gang, linked to the United States and Israel, in the southern Sistan & Baluchestan province that borders Pakistan, killing one and capturing six others. And the Americans say they won’t return to talks unless Tehran stops attacking commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz amid reports that Trump is considering using nukes against the Islamic Republic.
Last week the United States stepped up its blockade against Iran with a new campaign aimed at cutting Iran’s remaining financial lifelines. Dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast” any country doing business with Iran now risks being cut off from the American financial system.
But the Iranians think time is on their side. US diesel prices hit a record high last week as higher crude oil prices drove up the cost of fuel that underpins much of the American economy – now top of the opposition Democrats agenda in the run-up to the mid-term elections in November.
Trump’s Republican party is expecting a hammering in the November polls and a lame-duck president will strengthen the hand of Iran at the negotiating table when the peace talks eventually resume.
Meanwhile Chinese Presi dent Xi Jinping raised a four point proposal on building a new security architecture in the Middle East during talks with Egyptian President Ab del Fattah El-Sisi in Cairo last week.
In his talks with the Egyptian leader Xi said China supports countries in the region in developing good-neighbourly and friendly relations and outlined the Chinese plan for common, comprehensive, co operative and sustainable security in the region.
In the meantime the war goes on with a continuing double-blockade that has cut marine oil exports from the oil-rich Arab Gulf states to a trickle while Israel steps up its attacks on Arabs in Lebanon, Syria and the occupied West Bank to boost the chances of the hard-line Zionist parties in the run-up to their own general election next month.
In the Pentagon military leaders have warned Trump’s Anti-Trump protest in the US. “Minister of War”, Pete Hegseth, against escalation which, they say, would endanger US bases in other parts of the globe. But others fear Trump is actually thinking of nuking Iran regardless of the consequences.
Though Trump has publicly ruled out an American nuclear attack on Iran there are persistant reports that the White House is considering “credible, rational nuclear options” to end the impasse with the Islamic Republic over control of the Persian Gulf.
Tucker Carlson, the well known American journalist and media pundit that was once a staunch supporter of Donald Trump, now says that his former idol should be removed from office if he is contemplating using nukes against Iran.
“The second any president actively considers the first use of nuclear weapons, that person should be removed from office immediately, because that’s got to be the red line, destroying all of humanity with a nuclear strike,” Carlson said.
“Why isn’t there an attempt to remove him from office, like, immediately? Anyone who would even tolerate that kind of talk from any of his subordinates or employees is by definition unfit”.
